Tips on travelling greener with Transfercar

We are all aware that private vehicles are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions globally. OK…possibly not quite as high as the agriculture sector (why NZ introduced the FART TAX!), but significant all the same.

Since many of us are not yet ready to ditch the wheels and put on a pair of rollerblades, we have to do our part in reducing these emissions while still enjoying the freedom and pleasure our cool little free relocation cars or campervans gives us without the guilt trip of killing the planet.

Also, being a green tourist does not only apply to getting around. It means so much more.

Here’s some ideas that will not only help save the planet, but will help save your wallet in the process:

Driving:

  • Make sure your car is properly tuned up, you have the right tyres and tyre pressure and have had your wheels aligned. This allows the vehicle to run more efficiently and generated fewer harmful gases
  • Keep your cool while driving and accelerate smoothly. All that constant accelerating and braking will cost you at the pump
  • On the road, think ahead and know exactly where you are going
  • Avoid racing to get through orange or red lights, stop tailgating, and pay attention to traffic around you
  • Empty then car before you drive. All that dead weight means more gas!
  • Cut down on unnecessary idling (turn off your engine if you will be stationary for more than 60 seconds)
  • Use the cruise control feature, and put your vehicle in overdrive as often as you can
  • Keep the windows closed if possible
  • Avoid short trips. Driving when your engine is cold chews up 20% more fuel
  • Watch your speed. Driving at 100km rather than 110kms can cut your fuel bill by 13%

General:

  • Keep your rubbish in the car or bins provided!
  • Use eco friendly products
  • Eat local produce and give back to the community by buying local products
  • Be considerate of local rules and regulations and be friendly!!
  • Buy a good metal water bottle that can be reused
  • When hiking, always stay on marked trails and maintain a safe distance from any animals you encounter
  • Light campfires only in established fire rings and be sure they’re completely extinguished before you leave
  • When snorkeling, do not touch the coral or stir up sediment, as these actions can damage the reef’s fragile ecosystem
  • Keep your showers short, and shut off the water while you’re brushing your teeth
  • When you leave the room, turn off the air conditioning, heat, television, lights or any other electric devices
  • Reuse your sheets and towels instead of having them changed every day. Many hotels will not replace your towels if you leave them hanging up neatly; if you’re not sure, write a note for the housekeeping staff or notify the front desk

Although almost insignificant on their own, together these little gems will not only help save our gorgeous planet, but will keep a few of those hard earned pennies in your pocket longer.
